In the current COVID-19 pandemic, we are hearing many pieces of advice to help “flatten the curve,” preventing the spread of the disease and keeping those around you safe and healthy. This guidance is not random or anecdotal; research backs our public policy and informs public health.

Vaccination development research normally makes big news because it’s the “superhero” of disease research. The ability to squash a villain before it attacks makes a great storyline. However, many more lives have been saved by “unsung heroes” like research into the effectiveness of hand washing with soap and using proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
